 ADSL router and D20 Map
Just a question before I attempt to aggravate myself. I presently run a D20 modern game on ORPG. I can not host a server as I am behind a ADSL router connecting me to the internet. The router has a NAT designation and my computer a regular static IP. I can not host a ORPG server because of the router. Do you know if I can host a D20 map server?

well...
sort of
unlike v6, the server in v7 is a seperate program, that can run on anyone's machine
if you can get one of your players who is not behind a NAT to run it, and use his/her IP as the server, you can host off of their machine.
all you do is, get them to run the server executable, and get the IP out to everyone. YOu then type in their IP, and hit HOST. it'll take a bit more coordination, but should work.... this person MUST wait until you host before attempting to join though.
in fact, i sorta do this myself. I run the server on another machien i've got here in my apartment. I run the game.exe off of my laptop, and host off of that other machine.

Yeah. I've had others host the orpg, although it works a little different as they host the server and, i believe, D20 map hosting may involve something more, i.e. able to send files directly from the 'host' hard drive to the others connected. Right? With ORPG I can't send those files directly, I must put them at my domain so others can download. Anyway, I haven't read D20 Maps guide yet, so all this may be way off. Thanks Anyways.

yes
if someone doesn't have a file that someone else has selected, it will bounce it off of the server, and download it to the machine(s) that doesn't have it IF it's under 400k in size...
someone already asked if that limitation can be increased, and it can't. Not without significant code modifications, do to the way i broke up the data into chunks and reconstructed it on the other end...

Ah, np. I keep my maps much smaller to ease the strain. Although with cable or dsl 400k is not much, one can still make a decent map and other visuals with alot less and a little sense. Anyway, thanks for the info. Maybe after the holidays I'll check it out and find a game to play in to learn it before I consider switching my ORPG group, www.tutko.us/unit93/forum/ , over to it. Thanks again.

well, i don't think there are very many people using the program, so you might have trouble finding a game to join.
IDJester is getting a small group together for his own game. I have offered to run a one night demo-game, so they could see how it works. Perhaps you could join in on that.
not sure when they're looking to do this. probably in the next couple weeks.

Howdy all;
I just was reading your post and saw my name. Yep Michael I'm still getting some people together for the game night for a little testing and anybody that you know of that would like to be part of that is fine with me. If GTutko is interested in joining it to see it in action that's fine with me. We were going to try and setup something maybe in a week maybe 2 whenever we can get something scheduled with you and have everybody ready.
